Remember John Mark Karr? He was the creepy teacher who confessed to killing JonBenet Ramsey, but when police began investigating they determined he could not have been at the crime scene. Well, apparently after that, a former student of his—Samantha Speigel, now 19—contacted him online and the two became friends. Then more. They eventually got engaged. Soon after, Speigel’s parents sent her to rehab to get over her drug addictions and her relationship with Karr, but when she came back, she went right back to him. Karr allegedly asked Speigel to help him find young girls to join what she calls a sex cult. “He typically likes 5 and 6-year-olds,” she says. “He told me to go out there and recruit children. I started — when I was on the street I’d kind of size up girls, I thought about him meeting my niece … I didn’t think there was anything wrong with him having sexual relationships with children. It just seemed healthy for him, you know, like, why keep him from doing what he loves?” I don’t even know where to start with the levels of sick in this. I hope this girl gets serious therapy.
Speigel also made another interesting allegation—she claims that Karr is now living in Washington state as a woman, under the name Delia Alexis Reich. When The Daily Beast contacted Karr for comment, he said, “Do you make a difference in the lives of children with your research or do you only blast pedophiles and talk the rhetoric of the severe punishment they deserve? Aren’t the children the matter at hand and not the pedophiles? Do you consider me a pedophile? … You’d have to prove that with more than rumor. If you do accuse me of such, I deny the accusation emphatically.” Creepy, creepy, creepy.
Whether Speigel is telling the truth remains unclear—this could be the revenge game of a teenager, albeit it one that implicates her as helping a pervert — but it’s really kind of hard to believe Karr. I mean, the guy did make up that he strangled a 6-year-old girl. Him actually being a pedophile just doesn’t seem like that much of a logical leap. [NY Daily News]
