All Up In The Upfronts: Why We Can’t Wait For “Hellcats”

In the upfront-iverse, this morning was CBS’s turn to unveil their fall lineup. But because I’m feeling a smidge uninspired by it (sitcom, sitcom, police show, “Hawaii Five-O”), I’m moving on to an offering from The CW that is going to be pure genius. “Hellcats” is a series about a competitive college cheerleading squad starring Ashley Tisdale of “High School Musical” and Aly Michalka of 78violet (aka Aly & AJ). The show is created by Kevin Murphy (“Desperate Housewives,” “Caprica”) and is executive-produced by AJ Marcantonio and Tom Welling, who you more likely know as Clark Kent on “Smallville.” I will confess to being completely and totally biased when it comes to this show. See, “Hellcats” is inspired by my book, CHEER!: Inside The Secret World Of College Cheerleaders, which follows three highly ranked cheerleading squads through their intense 2006/7 seasons. So what’s the storyline of “Hellcats”? When sarcastic rocker Marti loses her scholarship at Lancer University, she has to figure out how to stay in school, stat. And so she tries out for her school’s formerly glorious cheerleading squad, the Hellcats, who are led by peppy, Southern belle captain Savannah (Tisdale). The cast is amazing, the writing is stellar, and the cheer scenes … well, let’s just say that you’re in for a visual treat.

The Frisky will, of course, be following this show closely and bringing you lots of behind-the-scene details in the fall. So stay tuned!
