Could your hair help contain the oil spill endangering the Gulf of Mexico? Several salons in Florida are bagging their clients’ excess hair to send to relief efforts. Human hair, apparently, can be stuffed into a boom and used as contraption to absorb and contain the spillage. However, for the time being, these salons are holding on to pounds of snipped locks as the plan has encountered some problems with determining where they should send the bags of hair. In the meantime, Matter of Trust, the nonprofit behind the effort, suggests that locals donate a material that is also used in boom construction: nylon. And, they say, “Runs are okay.” Bizarre and intriguing! [Tampa Bay Online]
