Last week, we asked you to share your experiences with running away. Wow, some of you really provided your families (and us) with some laughs as kids and teens, but the winner of “The Runaways” and Make Up For Ever prize pack is Scrabble for this story that involved strangers, the police, and a car chase:
“When I was about 6, I decided to run away by getting on a different school bus at the end of the day and going to my friend’s house. She lived on an unpaved road, though, and a thunderstorm had washed it out so the road was closed. When the bus stopped at the end of the road, everyone’s parents were there waiting to pick them up; a few parents offered me a ride home but I refused. No way was I going back to… whatever it was that I was mad about.
About half a mile down the road I got tired and sat down on the grass embankment to eat my crackers. It started raining again and I didn’t have a raincoat. A man jogged by and stopped to ask me what I was doing, but I refused to talk to him: I was very into the “don’t talk to strangers” rule. So… he called the police.
About 15 minutes later there were two cop cars pulling up to me. I panicked and started to run. Then “chased” me down (going about 4mph) and asked me if they could call my parents. So they did, and they offered to give me a ride home. But I said no because I wasn’t allowed to take rides from strangers. They laughed their asses off, put my mom on the phone to tell me it was okay to get in the car, and when I got home everyone was joking about my big car chase.”
