Hands down, the best thing about working at The Frisky is our amazing readers. We so heart all of your witty, thoughtful, and informative comments—heck, we even appreciate the mean ones. Sometimes, we can’t help but wonder about the faces behind avatars. We decided to launch a weekly column where we learn all about a Frisky reader. After the jump, meet hlnbabe, one of our most prolific commenters. The Frisky: Hlnbabe please state your full name, age, and location for The Friskyverse.
H: Helen, 24, Connecticut. Used to be a New York City dweller, and will hopefully return, but got a great job in my home state and so I’m focusing on my career for now. At least it’s a progressive state to live in—we received an A from NARAL and we have gay marriage. Although, we did give the country Joe Lieberman. Sorry guys!
The Frisky: How did you find the site?
H: I kept clicking on The Frisky articles on CNN, and gave in fully. I became a Friskyholic on August 31, 2009.
The Frisky: What do you do all day, other than follow The Frisky, which is totally condoned?
H: I’m an analyst with a consulting firm; we work in CPG market analytics. It’s not that interesting to many people—lots of numbers and minutia—but I enjoy it. Outside work, I spend my days trying to stay active, running or swimming. I just started yoga a few weeks ago. I love to read and see concerts so often that I don’t know why Rolling Stone hasn’t offered me a job yet. I’m working on a comic book that I hope to turn into a stop motion movie when completed. That’s pretty much it. Oh and I have an online shopping addiction. I love coming home from work to presents I bought myself at work.
The Frisky: Relationship status?
H: Recently became single and very heartbroken about it, but it’s mostly my own doing. Egads! Admitting one’s faults is hard. But each day is a new day so just working on Me for a little while.
The Frisky: What is your fave post in recent Frisky history?
H: I don’t think I have a favorite post. I love them all. I enjoy Reader Revealed, Today’s Lady News, and Dear Wendy. There’s something about Dear Wendy, no matter the topic. When you’re in the situation the obvious answer isn’t so obvious and it’s nice to know other people struggle to find the answers like I do. Also, LOVE posts where Frisky readers disagree. Good times.
The Frisky: What are your pop culture guilty pleasures?
H: I watch “Grey’s Anatomy” even though it is blatantly unrealistic. They are all different types of surgeons, but magically they see each other all the time and share far too much personal information. The entire story line is absurd and impossible, but I watch it regardless, every week, without fail.
The Frisky: Can you share your most embarrassing dating story? We always share ours. It’s only fair.
H: For some reason when I eat rice, I sometimes get it in my nose. I coughed in the middle of a date and of course I was eating rice! So I’m trying to stay calm and talk, but all I can feel is this agonizing sensation of a grain of rice in my nose. Unfortunately the only way to get it out is to blow your nose or to snuff it back really hard, like when you have a cold. I tried everything I could in the bathroom to no avail. A little while later at the table, I snuffed back really hard without thinking about it, as a reflex, hooray the rice dislodged! But then I choked on it. So all the guy sees is my unattractive face as I make a loud nasty snuff like a cold, all phlegmy like, and then me choking profusely. He was concerned and got me water, but also looked horrified. He also never called again.
The Frisky: Who is your celebrity doppelganger?
H: I get Sandra Bullock, Madeleine Stowe, and an occasional Julia Roberts. I don’t see it, eh.
The Frisky: What type of skivvies do you have on right now?
H: Plain, white bikini-cut knickers.
The Frisky: Can you share the last text message you sent?
H: “haha no. kept my maturity, you’re safe.” Yesterday was parade day and I found my roommate passed out in the bathroom at home. I’m notorious for taking pictures and playing pranks, but I was nice for once and just put her to bed.
The Frisky: What is your secret talent?
H: I can get rice in my nose. Nah, I don’t think I have any secret ones. I’m a decent artist and I can tie a knot in a cherry stem with my tongue. I’m ridiculously good at Sudoku and puzzles, but I haven’t found a way to market that talent just yet.
The Frisky: Favorite book, movie, musician or band?
H: Holy moly, where to begin? I love The World According to Garp (I secretly wish Roberta Muldoon was a real person and that we could be best friends), anything by David Sedaris, Pride & Prejudice, and Rabbit, Run. I just like books, and giving them to people I think will like them after I finish. Movies, well, I’m a sci-fi/fantasy junkie. Hmmm, shortlist: “Bladerunner” (Director’s Cut), “Supertroopers,” “Zombieland,” “The Fall” (Great Lee Pace film), “The Fifth Element,” “Sunshine” (Even though it got railed on), “Watchmen,” and “A Single Man.” Music … woof! I love everything and I mean it, even country. I’ll rock out to some Josh Turner or Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” any day! Music speaks the soul. Lately, I’ve been really into La Roux, Beirut, Little People, and Kid Cudi (the whole album is fantastic), but my staples are Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beatles, Miike Snow, Ratatat, Moby, Iggy Pop, Neil Young—this list could go forever. One of my childhood best friends is in a band. Mike Falzone and the Peppermint Trick, so I listen to them and I know this is a blatant plug, but they are really good and he’s my best friend. Music is my world. I’m that person who Googles lyrics when I like the song on a commercial and I get overly excited for my newsletters telling me when concert tickets are going on sale. Ahhh music. J’adore.
The Frisky: Who is your celebrity obsession?
H: I don’t really get celebrity obsessions. My roommates and I in college had a brief obsession with Mo’Nique and Sommore in the Original Queens of Comedy. I really love Colin Firth. I own the BBC “Pride & Prejudice” and actually watch it quite regularly. I guess he would be my celebrity obsession. Him or Aasif Mandvi from “The Daily Show.”
The Frisky: What’s something you hope to see more of on The Frisky?
H: I love the Girl Talk columns and reading all the wonderful Frisky staff’s perspectives, especially Ami’s recent post about meeting up with her ex. It really helped me a lot with my own issues, thank you! I find so many of those articles either directly correlate to something in my life or give me insight on something that could very easily happen in my life. I would also love more of the DIY columns.
