Jeremy Laing’s Modern Day Fairy Tale

The first thing I noticed when I walked backstage for designer Jeremy Laing’s show was that the hairdressers were attacking the models’ heads with large sewing needles. My pal the lovely and talented lead stylist Marco Santini of NYC’s Ion Studio explained: “They’re antique mattress needles I found in Italy. They work perfectly for this style.” He used them to “stitch” and weave elastic into the girls’ hair, then pinned pieces on top to make it look textured. Laing’s mandate, that the girls look they just stepped out of a grunge fairy tale, made for roughed up edges that looked a little wet (courtesy a Davines conditioning product) after a forest rain. It was really quite beautiful in an elegant, unstudied way. MAC makeup artist Hung Vaango complemented the look with sophisticated burgundy eyeliner that he achieved via a MAC Lip Pencil in Velvetella (don’t try this at home kids), which he said, “will bring out any eye color.”

As for the clothes? Think Canadian hunter-trapper meets a fairy tale wood nymph, and I actually mean that in a good way. Click through for more and a closer look at that hair…
