If you’re not familiar with designer Richard Chai, here’s a quick history lesson: He used to be the design director at Marc Jacobs (ring a bell?), which made perfect sense given he presented a grungy street urchin meets girly-girl collection that reminded us of Marc by Marc in all the best ways. For the Richard Chai Love show, he combined pretty prints with clay-hued separates and baggy skirts and trousers with the waistbands rolled over in a style we haven’t seen since the ’90s. While we won’t be copping the latter look, we were turned on by boyish gray chunky boots, baggy sequin pants under knit layers, and smart wool military coats in olive and chocolate brown. We already knew grunge was back, but from the looks of this updated version, it’s here to stay for a while. Hint: This time around, just pair it with red lips.
