Style 911: How Do I Accessorize A Simple LBD?

“A bunch of my friends are getting married over the next few months and I want to recycle a few of the dresses I already own. My favorite is a little black dress that’s pretty but maybe not exciting enough to just wear with black shoes and call it a day. How can I accessorize it to look more fun? Help!–Moira

Lucky for you, Moira, this is a actually a pretty easy thing to do. Most important is deciding which color group you want your accessories to fall under. (Nothing should be too matchy-matchy, but a general family of color is a good place to start.) We’re big fans of silver and pewter both with black and with several other colors (meaning that you could potentially reuse the accessories for other weddings with other dresses), so that’s where we’ll be looking.
Apparently Moira’s dress looks a lot like this one from Nanette Lepore.

With a v-neck dress like this, a statement necklace should be your main piece of jewelry. Go retro chic with distressed pearls or modern edgy with tarnished chain. [left: $42, Anthropologie; right: $42, Madewell,]
*Note: if your dress is strapless or otherwise has a neckline that goes straight across, you’ll probably want to pick a chunky cuff bracelet instead of a necklace.

A dark, sparkly clutch is never a problem. Just remember that texture matters and you should try to incorporate it into your accessories wherever possible. [$25, The Limited]

Love that these shoes are in the same color family as the necklace and clutch but have a totally different (though complimentary!) feel. As for the tights, try something dark but not totally opaque. [shoes: $514, Alexander McQueen; tights: $18, Anthropologie]
