Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is famous for her 2008 campaign to run for president, of course, but don’t forget she also served almost nine years as a Democratic senator in New York State where she fought for women and girls. Clinton has long argued government should make abortion “safe, legal and rare” an in 2005, she urged the FDA to make the morning after pill available to women. As SOS, Clinton has traveled the world advocating the point of view that societies will not progress unless women are economically and politically equal.

But Clinton has been an advocate of women’s rights for longer than just this past decade, though: as First Lady in 1995 she traveled to China to attend the Fourth World Conference on Women and gave a famous speech in which she declared women’s rights could no longer be thought of as separate from human rights:

“It is time for us to say here in Beijing, and the world to hear, that it is no longer acceptable to discuss women’s rights as separate from human rights. It is a violation of human rights when babies are denied food, or drowned, or suffocated, or their spines broken, simply because they are born girls…[or] when women and girls are sold into slavery or prostitution for human greed. It is a violation of human rights when women are doused with gasoline, set on fire and burned to death because their marriage dowries are deemed too small…[or] when thousands of women are raped in their own communities and when thousands of women are subjected to rape as a tactic or prize of war.”
