Today’s Lady News: TV Shows Boobs To Help Screen Breast Cancer & Women Are Banned From Wearing Jeans

  • A TV segment on WJLA Channel 7 in Washington about breast self-exams will feature two women fully exposing their naked boobies on late-afternoon and evening broadcasts. One of the women is a cancer survivor who said she hopes to help other women spot cancer before it spreads. [Washington Post]—Awesome! It’s about time we stopped treating a woman’s body as if its only purpose is to make boners happen.
  • The health care bill written up by the House of Representatives officially prohibits domestic violence as a “pre-existing condition.” []—Great! Now, how about we legislate getting raped isn’t a “pre-existing condition,” either?
  • Muslim women in Indonesia are forbidden to wear jeans or tight pants according to one province’s Shariah police. The government has already ordered 7,000 skirts in various sizes to give to women caught in immodest pants. [New York Times]
  • Yesterday President Obama signed a hate crimes bill which extends the definition of a federal hate crime to one committed because of the victim’s sexual orientation, gender identity and disability. [Washington Post]
  • Baltimore’s City Council is debating a requirement that “crisis pregnancy centers,” known for setting up camp near abortion clinics to dissuade women from terminating their pregnancies, hang signs in English and Spanish in their waiting rooms clarifying that the centers do not offer abortions or birth control. “It’s important that women, particularly in vulnerable situations, get adequate and accurate medical information at the time they need it. We have information that many of these centers were giving misleading information or not giving full information,” the City Council president said. [Channel WJZ 13]
  • The first criminal prosecution of a man involved in the 2008 raid on a polygamist sect began yesterday. Raymond Merill Jessop, 38, is on trial for sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl. Over 400 children were eventually removed from the polygamist compound. [L.A. Times]
  • A Somalian man who claims to be 112 years old has taken a 17-year-old girl as his sixth wife. The girl’s family says she’s happy about the marriage. [BBC]
  • Kenya will conduct a census of its gay population. Officials say the information will help them fight HIV/AIDs, but critics are suspicious because homosexuality is illegal there. [BBC]
  • Marlon King, a British soccer player, has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for sexual assault and punching a woman in the nose when the woman struggled to break free. Once this incident (which occurred at a party celebrating his wife’s pregnancy, believe it or not!) came to light, it was revealed that he has had three prior instances of sexual assault against women since 2003. King has been fired from his team, Wigan Athletic. [Times of London]
  • How awesome is this? Dr. Elena Bodnar won something called the “Ig Nobel Prize” for inventing a bra that doubles as a lifesaving face mask! Bodnar said she thought up the idea for a lifesaving brassiere after treating Chernobyl victims in Ukraine. [Chicago Tribune]
