Let’s Hear It For The Ladies!

For seemingly inexplicable reasons, the fashion industry has always been a bit of a boy’s club, despite the fact that women are the main consumers. But Sarah Mower of the Telegraph recently issued a bold statement by claiming that all of the designers to watch right now are women, and in doing so, she name drops quite a few powerful ladies: the Rodarte sisters (Kate and Laura Mulleavy), Phoebe Philo of Celine, as well as the new brood from London — Mary Katrantzou, Joanna Sykes, Holly Fulton, Louise Gray, Natascha Stolle and Hannah Marshall. Of course, we have to agree with her as we swell in pride for our fellow lovely ladies. But there are more! Don’t forget about Gucci’s designer Frida Giannini, Sophie Theallet, Charlotte Ronson, Behnaz Sarafpour, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig of Marchesa, Sonia Rykiel, Doo-Ri Chung, Vera Wang, Miuccia Prada, (who designs for Prada AND Miu Miu) Betsey Johnson, Diane von Furstenberg, and Anna Sui to name literally just a few! Fashion design is no stranger to the ladies — Coco Chanel built her own space in a man’s world, Donna Karan created an empire, and Donatella Versace took control of the storied house of Versace. Still, it’s a little crazy to consider that it’s remarkable when women fashion designers are enjoying a “moment.” I mean, it would make sense that the best designer for womenswear would, in fact, be a woman, right?
