Remote Control: What You’ll Want To Watch The Week Of October 12th 2009

Over the past few weeks, there’s been so much new TV and so little time. But now that we’ve reached mid-October, it’s time to settle in and get comfortable with your old favorites. This week brings the season premieres of “30 Rock,” “Nip/Tuck,” and “Ugly Betty.” Oh, but there are a few new things, too. You definitely won’t want to miss DJ AM’s “Gone Too Far,” which promises to be “Intervention” turned up a few notches. Oh, and “The Newlywed Game” welcomes its first gay couple.

The Show: “DJ AM’s Gone Too Far”
Set Your DVR For: Tonight, 10 p.m. (EST), MTV
We know it was hard to clear space among such Emmy-worthy fare like “Real World/Road Rules Challenge” and “Bully Beatdown,” but we are extremely glad that MTV decided to air DJ AM’s show about the powers of addiction. Before his death in late August, DJ AM worked with eight young addicts and their families, urging them down the path to sobriety. The show is raw—expect footage of heroin addicts with needles in their arms—and tear-inducingly poignant.

The Show: “The Newlywed Game”
Set Your DVR For: Tuesday, 6 p.m. (EST), GSN
Normally, you couldn’t pay me to recommend that you watch the freaking “Newlywed Game.” But this is the very special celebrity edition, starring George Takei, aka Captain Sulu from “Star Trek,” and his husband Brad Altman—the first gay couple to ever appear on the show. Tune in for the semi-revolution. They best win, since they’ve been together for 20-plus years.

The Show: Nip/Tuck
Set Your DVR For: Wednesday, 10 p.m. (EST), FX
One of my dorky favorite things on television shows is when a second actor steps into a character’s shoes. Remember second Becky on “Roseanne,” i.e., Sarah Chalke? Or Vivian #2 on the “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”? Well, Wednesday’s season premiere of “Nip/Tuck” will bring you Teddy #2—she was originally played by Katee Sackoff, but now the role has been handed off to the too-gorgeous-for-her-own-good Rose McGowan.

The Show: “30 Rock”
Set Your DVR For: Thursday, 9:30 p.m. (EST), NBC
Holler!!!!!! Liz Lemon, Tracy Jordan, and Jack Donaghy are finally back!!!!! In lieu of further text, I’m just gonna type a whole bunch of exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Show: “Ugly Betty”
Set Your DVR For: Friday, 8 p.m. (EST), ABC
ABC has moved “Ugly Betty” to the dreaded Friday evening no-one-will-watch-because-they’re-out-having-fun slot, which is usually a first step towards killing a show. So “Ugly Betty” really needs your love, OK? Why should you give it? Because this season, Betty finally gets a makeover. Took them long enough.
