What Will Become Of Maison Martin Margiela?

While some designers, like Karl Lagerfeld, love to take center stage — he’s even translated his life and iPod obsession into a documentary –Martin Margiela is quite the opposite.

He prefers to stay hidden in the shadows. So hidden, in fact, that most blogs use a question mark in place of a picture for him, because there’s only one known image of the designer (published in The New York Times). But his secretive lifestyle doesn’t stop the fashion crowd who live for his surrealist creations and edgy, conversation-provoking pieces. Now, along with his low profile, it seems the designer has officially taken on a quieter lifestyle. He has quit his position at his eponymous label, Maison Martin Margiela. Rumors have been swirling about the future of the brand, as Diesel owner Renzo Rosso just bought a majority stake in the company. While the future of MMM is uncertain, the “fresh new talent” they’re looking for has some serious design skills to live up to: Margiela was certainly a master. [Grazia]
