The Wisconsin Tourism Federation has recently made a very big decision. Rather than stick with the acronym “WTF” and continue to be made fun of by sites like Boing Boing and Language Log, they’ve done a little switcheroo. They are now the Tourism Federation of Wisconsin, or “TFW.” Here are some other organizations with laughable acronyms that might want to consider doing the same.
- Another passenger in the WTF boat: The World Taekwondo Federation.
- Universal Technical Institute, where peeps go to train to be NASCAR technicians, has the unfortunate initials UTI. How do you not laugh saying “I go to UTI”?
- For 25 years, STD Development has been making engine parts. They really need to rethink that.
- Object Management Group, a “computer industry consortium,” is certainly not worthy of an OMG. But they have the initials trademarked.
- Poor Association of Soccer Sponsors. ASS just isn’t the most pleasant acronym.
- Ditto for the Texas Institute of Technology. Goooo …TIT?
- You know what doesn’t make me laugh out loud? The Lord of Life church, or LOL.
- On another tangent, we’re always amused by the website WhoRepresents.com, where we look up contact info for celebrity publicists. Read it wrong and it’s WhorePresents.com.
- Same goes for NYcanal.com, a site dedicated to canals in New York. Many people navigate there expecting NYCanal.com.
