If You Want To Look Dirty, Apply Your Makeup With A Sock Like They Did At Erin Wasson x RVCA
Before model-turned-designer Erin Wasson’s show on Friday night, we spoke with Charlotte Willer, global makeup artist for Maybelline New York, about the dusty, desert-inspired makeup the models sported. Willer wanted the makeup to reflect “this cool girl, a fashion icon who’s been in the desert all day.” So, if a cool girl/fashion icon like Wasson spends all day in the desert, what does she look like? She’s wearing tons of black eyeliner, and her face is caked with dirt.
Willer mixed shades of Maybelline New York’s Dream Liquid Mousse in shades darker than the models’ skin so they looked extra tan. Then, she lined the eyes and applied Lash Stiletto Ultimate Length Washable Mascara and Color Sensational Lipcolor in Plum Perfect to their lips. After that, she brushed Mineral Power Naturally Luminous Blush in Fresh Plum around the eye area to make the girls look like they’d gotten too much sun. But the real secret to the sun-baked looked was an argyle sock from Willer’s own closet: “I dip a sock into powder, and because of the creases in the sock, you get an effect that looks like dirt. You would never get that with a brush or your fingers.”
Unless you’re planning to dress up as a castaway who spent weeks baking in the sun for Halloween, you probably won’t find much use for this caked dirt makeup technique. But the makeup went well with the chic hippie aesthetic that would work as music festival attire (especially the “Keep it Neil” T-shirt). And, perhaps we’ll get to see “Gossip Girl” Taylor Momsen, who sat in the front row, wearing one of the many crop tops in the collection. It could be a nice change from her pantslessness.
