Did Melanie Oudin’s Mom Have An Affair With Her Coach?
This is the part where becoming an overnight sensation gets not-so-pretty. Yesterday afternoon, 17-year-old U.S. Open phenom Melanie Oudin went down in her match against number 9-seeded Caroline Wozniacki. And to add insult to injury, this morning reporters are poking into the details of her personal life. Last summer, Melanie’s dad, John, filed for divorce from her mom, Leslie. Sports Illustrated tracked down the divorce papers and found that the grounds given were adultery. John claimed that
Melanie Leslie was having an affair with Brian de Villiers, aka Melanie’s coach.
“I didn’t initial [sic] take any action regarding my early suspicions because I didn’t want to believe my wife was having an affair with my daughter’s tennis coach,” the papers read. “On December 29, 2007, I confronted my wife about whether she was having an affair with Brian de Villiers. I confronted Brian de Villiers separately. My wife and Brian de Villiers both admitted to me they were having an affair…Both [Melanie and her twin sister, Katherine] asked me point blank if I thought Mom was having an affair with Brian. When I asked why they had suspicions, Melanie told on one occasion she woke up at 1a.m. in her hotel room and Leslie was not there. She called Brian’s cell phone and connected with her.”
The couple reached an agreement last December whereby Leslie would have no interactions with John outside of the usual tennis rigamrole. Their divorce is currently pending.
Poor Melanie. Knowing that her mom and coach were doing the deed is bad enough. But having that be public knowledge has gotta really suck. Though I guess technically that I am participating in that right now. [Sports Illustrated]
