Drew Barrymore’s Female Fight Club
A few years ago, I heard a rumor about a female fight club on a college campus in North Carolina. I tried for months to find someone who was a member so that I could write a story about them, but I never got very far because, well, we all know the first rule of fight club. Turns out, I should have been talking to Drew Barrymore. In the new issue of Time Out New York, in addition to snapping some gorgeous photos of New York City, Drew sat down for an interview to talk about her directorial debut, the roller derby flick “Whip It.” Here’s what she had to say about the movie and the huge bruises all over her body.
“What I love about [roller derby] is that it’s real and high stakes. And by the way, it’s scary as sh*t to do. I wouldn’t have guessed that the first film I directed would have a sports element, but then again it doesn’t surprise me, because I love girls getting to do what boys do…We also had female fight club. We discovered at a bar one night that I definitely have that, like, feisty little boy inside of me, and when I drink he comes out.” [Time Out]
Now I can’t get the image out of my head of Drew, Ellen Page, and Kristen Wiig beating the bejeezus out of each other in a bar basement. And this also has me wondering, would a female fight club be different than a dude one? Would you ever join one? Do you think there’s anything therapeutic about throwing punches and getting beat up?
