Jaycee Lee Dugard: Her Kidnapper Calls A Reporter And Her Stepdad Appears On “Today”

Holy creepy. Last night, Philip Garrido, the man who allegedly kidnapped Jaycee Lee Dugard, kept her in a compound in his backyard, raped her, and fathered her two children, called a reporter from jail. Listen to the recording above. He says, “In the end you’re going to find the most powerful heart-warming story.” Yeah, somehow I just don’t think that’s gonna be the case. Happy Friday! More info on this horrific case, after the jump…
  • This morning, Jaycee’s stepfather, Carl Probyn, who witnessed Jaycee being forced into a car 18 years ago but was too far away to stop the crime, appeared on the “Today Show.” Mostly he talked about how Jaycee, now 29, was doing. “She didn’t try to get away, and it probably kept her alive. If she would have been really spunky, and fight and tried to escape, maybe she would have been killed,” he said. “My wife says that Jaycee is really feeling guilty for bonding with this guy. So she’s really having a problem with that.” [New York Daily News]

  • Also, one of Garrido’s neighbors has come forward to say that, circa 1991, he saw Jaycee in the Garrido’s backyard and talked to her through a chain-link fence. He says he asked her if she was visiting or living with the Garridos, and she said living. Then Philip Garrido came out and grabbed her, and a short time later built an eight-foot fence between the properties. “I thought she was pretty,” said the neighbor, Patrick McQuaid. “I didn’t think anything of it. I was young.” [San Jose Mercury News]
