RIP: Songwriter Ellie Greenwich

Sigh. The summer of death continues. In addition to the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy on Tuesday evening, writer Dominick Dunne died yesterday, as did songwriter Ellie Greenwich. Greenwich is best known for writing a number of songs made famous by the girl groups of the ’60s — “Chapel of Love,” “Be My Baby,” and one of my most favorite songs of all time, “The Leader of the Pack.” Check out the Shangri-Las performing the heartbreaking tune above.
