Today In Terribleness: The Children’s Edition

Childhood is supposed to be marked by innocent playtime, school, and family. Children shouldn’t have to endure anything more serious than parents’ divorcing or the death of a relative. Recently, however, children have been in the news for reasons that would make most adults unable to cope.

  • A Houston woman, Katherine “Katie” Nadal, has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for severing her infant son’s genitals back in 2007. She claimed the family dog, a dachshund, ate the boy’s penis and testicles while she was asleep, but the jurors didn’t buy that defense, for obvious reasons. Nadal tested positive for cocaine, Xanax, methadone, and a tranquilizer on the day following the attack. [Houston Chronicle]
  • Melissa Huckaby, a former Sunday school teacher living in Tracy, CA, was indicted by a grand jury for the murder of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, her daughter’s playmate. Huckaby has been charged with kidnapping, rape, murder, and the drugging of Cantu and a 37-year-old male acquaintance. Her trial is slated to begin Sept. 24. [People]
  • A 13-year-old girl in Chicago literally killed her step-grandfather over spilled milk. It has been reported that tension was brewing between the girl and the step-grandfather. He supposedly taunted her with the last of the milk after she expressed a desire to eat cereal. When he poured it down the drain, she snapped, picked up a paring knife, and stabbed the man in his carotid artery, according to law enforcement and witnesses. [The Root]
