Timberbrit: The Opera About Britney Spears

Britney Spears has turned her life around for the better in the last year. But that doesn’t mean people have forgotten the train wreck she once was. And some even expect her to go off the deep end again. Composer Jacob Cooper has created “Timberbrit,” (get it Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears?) a contemporary opera that imagines the tragic end of Brit-Brit’s career. More, after the jump… This tale imagines Britney’s last concert, in which Justin tries to win back her love, but she chooses the love of her audience instead. Cooper was able to slow down her songs using a technique called, uh, time-slowing, and he found that her bubble gum pop-y lyrics, like “Hit me baby one more time,” took on a much more heavy meaning when brought down in tempo. He, then, collaborated with his performers to create new music based on Brit’s slowed-down hits. (Check out the video for “Worst Fantasy” inspired by “Toxic” above.) The semi-staged version of the opera premiered in New York City in 2008, but a full stage production is being developed. [NPR]
