Pump genius Charles Jourdan was a leader in the shoe biz — reaching cult status in the ’60s and ’70s — until the company slowly suffered from bankruptcy and fell off the map (despite attempts by the Hilton family to revive the label). Now, thanks to Alexandra Neel, best known for her design work with Celine and Balenciaga, Jourdan will make a comeback through a seriously hotly anticipated new collection set to come out in the fall.
Neel will (literally) have some big shoes to fill. The Charles Jourdan legacy is an interesting one, beginning in the 1930s when he became one of the first shoe designers to advertise in magazines and later growing to provide wares for Christian Dior. The classic Jourdan design was a perfect leather pump, usually with a rounded toe and punchy color. While Neel says that her designs look to provide consumers with something other than normal, we’re kind of hoping that she sticks with the basic Jourdan formula … we’ve been on the lookout for the perfect pump lately (as in, one you can actually walk in), and think this comeback might truly be the answer. We’ll let you know. [Elle UK]
