Jon And Kate Plus 8 Premieres, Still Hating The “Media Storm”

Last night, while most of us were recovering from a long weekend of food, booze and sun overexposure, the new season of “Jon and Kate Plus 8″ premiered on TLC. It seems Jon and Kate and their 8 kiddos are suffering from a bit of overexposure themselves. Ever since allegations of marital infidelity (Jon’s been accused of cheating on Kate with a young school teacher, Kate’s been accused of cheating on Jon with her bodyguard), the surly couple has been popular tabloid and blog fodder, creating a trail of paparazzi everywhere the family goes, much to Jon’s and Kate’s chagrin. “The media storm stuff? I hate the media storm stuff,” Jon says in a voice over on last night’s episode. “I did not sign up for public scrutiny of everything and neither did Kate.” Oh, no? Well, what did you think you were doing when you signed up for a reality TV show and invited cameras into your personal lives? “Now we’ve just gone up a level,” Kate says into one of the cameras about the media storm — an interesting choice of words for a woman many have said is fame and money-hungry. While the public scrutiny makes Kate “very mad,” she and Jon still have no plans to quit the show. “It’s my job,” she says matter-of-factly, “and I’ll be darned if they’re going to take me down.” For his part, Jon’s biggest worry isn’t so much for his marriage or his kids’ emotional and physical well-being, but that the kids won’t “believe him,” even though “they shouldn’t have any reason not to” because he says, in what might prove to be the most telling revelation of the season, he and his wife “have a pretty open relationship” and they “talk to their kids.” When the interviewer asks Jon if he’d like to address anything, Jon apologizes to his family for his actions, for being “at the wrong place at the wrong time,” saying he didn’t understand the ramifications. Guess Kate should have been more explicit about the rules of an “open relationship” when you’re a couple in the public eye who has 8 kids under the age of 10. Watch the full clip above, in which Kate says she “probably has some anger.”
