Hey There, Sailor: The Best Pin-up Girl Looks For Fleet Week

Hey there, sailor…it’s Fleet Week in NYC! It’s that time of year when even girls who swear they don’t dig dudes in uniform realize they are hard-pressed to resist the all American charm of nautical men.

If you are so inclined to do your patriotic duty and show one of these boys around town, we do not suggest wearing nautical-themed clothes. A night out on the town with a sailor while wearing a nautical outfit is a bit too much camp, even for us. This year we are thinking that a blast from the past of the best pin-up girl looks from the ’50s are the best bet for setting sea-faring hearts aflutter.

  • Red Lips and an Updo: Don’t have any ’50s inspired clothes? Not a problem. Nothing suggests “pin-up girl” like red lips and an updo. If you daring enough to pull a real Betty Grable, throw on your pearls (fake or real) and you will really look like the cat’s meow. [$15, Clinique High Impact Lip Color SPF 15 in Sassy Spice, Sephora]
  • Swimsuit: Not that I actually advocate wearing just a bathing suit strutting about the Big Apple, but this swimsuit is too cute to pass up. It is worth throwing a pool party just for an excuse to prance about in. [$43.50, Delias.com]
  • Shoes: How could you even consider dancing the night away in anything less than seriously snazzy retro heels? Swing out and twist about in red shiny shoes. [$39.99, Rockability, RetroCuties.com]
  • Dress:Fifties dresses are universally flattering. A full skirt looks flattering on everyone, a cinched-waist adds definition and a low-ish top…Plus, there is nothing more flirtatious than a swish of crinoline to get your sailor boy’s attention. [$72, Pinup Couture, PinupGirlClothing.com]
