The Zodiac Killer wasn’t just a serial psychopath—he was also a terrible dad. O, at least that’s what Deborah Perez is saying. Yesterday, she announced that her father, Guy Ward Hendrickson, was the notorious murderer who terrorized the Bay Area in the 1960s. Five Zodiac victims were confirmed, but in creepy letters he sent to local newspapers, he claimed 37. Not only are the crimes still unsolved, but his code remains uncracked. [San Francisco Chronicle]Perez was seven years old in 1968 and 1969, when she says her father went on his killing spree. He brought her along for the ride at least twice. “I was a child and just thought I was helping my father,” she says. She also claims that she helped him pen some of his letters. Maybe that’s why cops can’t make sense of lines like, “Dear Melvin This is the Zodiac speaking I wish you a happy Christmass.” Because they’re the handiwork of a seven year old?
Many people are doubting Perez’s story, but she says she has “proof”:
- A pair of eyeglasses supposedly belonging to the last victim.
- The Zodiac’s famous black hoodie, which she says she picked out.
- A scrapbook she claims he kept about the killings but which has mysteriously gone missing.
Hendrickson, who died in 1983, was a carpenter and father of six. Perez got the idea that he might be the Zodiac Killer when she saw a police sketch on “America’s Most Wanted.” She says her mom and siblings are still clueless.
Perez says she’s coming forward because she wants to “right his wrongs.” Or maybe her timing has something to do with the fact that she’s about to release a documentary?
What do you think? Do you believe her or think she’s wacko?
