Okay, this is too effed-up for words. Rubina Ali, the totally adorable little Latika whose cheeks you wanted to squeeze in “Slumdog Millionaire,” has been put up for sale by her father. Yep, you read right: for sale, not adoption. [New York Daily News]
Nine-year-old Rubina and her family live in a real-life slum of Mumbai, and her dad was hoping to cash in on her fame. Over the weekend, he met with journalists from Britain’s News of the World who were posing as a rich Middle Eastern couple. He hit them up for $300,000 to take Rubina. “I have to consider what’s best for me, my family and Rubina’s future,” he allegedly said to them. “The child is special now. This is an Oscar child!”
Kind of sounds like something that would happen to a character in the movie, right? Too bad this is real life. Luckily for Rubina, “Slumdog” director Danny Boyle has paid for an apartment the family will be moving into soon, and he’s set up a trust fund for Rubina’s education. We just hope she’s the ultimate winner in all this drama.
