Look, the excitement today is so palpable it’s hard to think about or work on anything else, so let’s just talk about what’s on all of our minds, shall we? The third season of “Mad Men” is a go!! Oh, okay, fine — that’s big, but it’s not the reason we had trouble sleeping last night, is it? Today’s the day Barack Obama is sworn in as our 44th president and the Bush’s will fly off into the sunset forever (well, maybe not into the sunset, but whatever that shining light from Texas looks like heralding them home…far, far away from the halls of Washington). In celebration on the big event, Oprah had a live show yesterday from the Kennedy Center that you may have heard about. In addition to Jill Biden’s goof, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore were on babbling about how important this momentous occasion is like it will finally be complete for the rest of us now that we know their thoughts on the event. The one fairly interesting thing they shared was this video Demi directed of celebrities pledging to “keep America strong, proud and green.” With pledges ranging from “feeding the poor” to “smiling more,” the video features celebrity pledges by Cameron Diaz, Hayden Panetierre, Laura Linney, Dakota Fanning, Jaime Pressley, Ashlee Simpson, Nicole Richie, Ashton Kutcher, Tobey Maguire, Diddy, Alyssa Milano, Marisa Tomei, Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette, and others.
“There’s an assumption that this one man is going to take on his new job full-time and somehow wave a magic wand of change, and I don’t believe that to be true,” Ashton tells Reuters. “I think that we have to be the leaders, and that’s not celebrities–I think that we as citizens have to be leaders of the movement that we want to create.”
