Only 170 of New York City’s 46,000 taxi drivers are women, according to the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission. “Because of security concerns and the solitude involved, driving a taxi is less attractive to women,” said Alfred LaGasse, executive director of the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association. In other countries, women have begun working as drivers to increase levels of safety. Pink Ladies, a London cab company formed in 2005 after a girl was murdered by someone posing as a taxi driver, now has a Moscow branch. Other similar operations are popping up in countries such as Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and India. The whole girl-driver thing is such a good idea and reminds me of the “escort service” we had in college. Wouldn’t it be nice to get into a cab and know you’d get home safely, even if you’re three sheets to the wind? [Women's ENews]
