Although the presidential election is less than a month away, Senator Joe Biden has been looking more tranquil lately. He and Senator Barack Obama are ahead in the polls, but I seriously doubt that they are resting easy until November 4. So what could have Biden looking a little more calm and less wrinkled?…Botox. The Washington Post has noticed that Biden’s eyes seem smaller and his forehead seems smoother. Compared to photos and video footage from last year, Biden definitely seems more rested. Last year, during the July 2007 CNN Debate a frustrated pair of vertical lines creeped up his brow as he described the suffering of refugees in Darfur. During the vice presidential debate with Governor Sarah Palin, recently, his anger was the same when he discussed the lack of funding in Afghanistan, but those wrinkles of frustration were noticeably absent.
Karen Bradley, a University of Maryland professor who studies politicians’ body movements, has also noticed a change in Biden’s appearance, saying it’s “a little strange that nothing moves from his eyes up.”
Barry Cohen, a Rockville plastic surgeon, has also assessed Biden’s new look. “He clearly has had Botox,” he said. “The lines are gone on his forehead. There is no way makeup or surgery could do that.”
Erwin Gomez, a Georgetown spa owner who is familiar with D.C.’s elite, agrees that Biden has had some Botox. “On the right and the left temple, you can see the lines, but he has no wrinkles in the forehead,” said Gomez. He thinks the senator had a shot of Botox to disable his scowl muscle, which can also cause unwanted heavy eyelids.
Not surprisingly, a spokesperson for Biden denies the claims. “Completely untrue, completely unsubstantiated,” said David Wade, adding that Americans should turn their attention back to the economy.
So what do you think? There’s no doubt that appearance has a place in politics, but should a politician’s face overshadow the real issues? If Biden was a woman, would we really care if he had Botox? Or would we think the injections were just another step to being elected? Please sound off in the comments section.
