There are a handful of songs in the running for the title of “Song of the Summer,” and London-born Estelle’s song “American Boy”, featuring Kanye West, is one of them. Jon and I tend to be a bit skeptical of hype, so we watched the video, and then talked about label whores and dating short people.
Jon: Fast Fact: I know that Estelle is performing at a Hamptons club this coming weekend. That’s all I know about her.
Catherine: I don’t know anything about her. Except that she has a bob and dances funny. And has a British accent.Jon: L.A. has a hand symbol?
Catherine: It’s a new thing. All the cool kids are doing it.
Jon: A 5-foot-7 guy is her type? Do ladies find shorter men attractive? I like shorter women, but I didn’t think that translated to the ladies.
Catherine: It depends. Personally, I don’t find it hard to find men who are taller than me, but I might prefer men who are on the tall side. Why do you think you prefer short ladies?
Jon: I prefer short ladies because taller ones challenge my masculinity. Kidding! Mostly!
Jon: JAZZ HANDS.
Catherine: She really likes those funny dance moves.
Jon: So she wants to come to NYC and LA to find short dudes in baggy jeans. Seems like a wasted trip.
Catherine: Well, you know, tight-ass pants aren’t as popular in other parts of the world. Plus, she would just take off the pants anyway. Why does Kanye always feel the need to wear fur?
Jon: Yeah, I don’t get his role as Louis Vuitton Don. He dresses like a frat guy with a trust fund and a mom who sometimes picks him up from Barneys. I had a roommate freshman year of college who wore Prada, D&G, Gucci, etc., because his mom would buy it for him. She was label whore, and instilled it in her son.
Catherine: Label-whoredom is genetic. “American Boy” is supposedly one of the big contenders for the song of the summer.
Jon: Definitely a contender. It’s got a nice laid-back vibe. You could toss it on at a house party or while just drinking a beer on the stoop. It’s versatile like that.
Catherine: Estelle’s real name is Fanta according to Wikipedia.
Jon: WHY WOULD SHE CHANGE THAT?
Catherine: I don’t know, why did you change your name from Squirt to Jon?
Jon: Self-evident, I think. Jon’s way sexier. I give this song a thumbs up. She doesn’t seem annoying, which is nice, and I look forward to hearing more of her fine work.
Catherine: That is your nicest review ever.
Jon: This is the best song we’ve reviewed.
