Starting next year, rape victims who are reluctant to go to the police can get an anonymous emergency-room forensic rape exam, and whatever evidence is gathered will be kept on file in a sealed envelope in case they decide to press charges. This is an extremely important step, as many rape victims who don’t go to the hospital after they’ve been assaulted because they don’t want to be forced to go to the police.
