The Lowdown: Okay, so I am not sure if 21 totally qualifies as a “chick flick,” but it’s got most of the variables: Kate Bosworth + hot up-and-comer Jim Sturgess + one somewhat tame, but still sexy love scene=good enough for me. Based on the true story and best-selling book, Bringing Down the House by Ben Mezrich, 21 is about six MIT students who are led by their professor (Kevin Spacey) to become experts in card counting. Through the use of fun disguises, fake ID’s and fancy hand signals, they manage to take the Vegas casinos for millions. The movie centers around Ben Campbell (Sturgess), a shy, math geek whose best friends are two fantastic (and sometimes scene stealing) nerds who are building a robot together. Ben has always played it safe, and as a result does not have much of a “life story.” Until, that is, he is recruited to join the secret Black Jack Club, and for a while leads an exciting double life—weekends he’s a high-roller embedded in the glitzy life of Vegas, complete with booze, babes (like Bosworth), and strippers; weekdays, he’s an MIT nerd with a secret and whole lotta cash stashed in his dorm room. Though with every roll comes a bust…when the stakes get too high, you gotta know when to fold, with success comes a price…[insert cliché here]. You get my point, and I won’t spoil the movie for you because this is definitely one you should check out for yourself.
The Verdict: Come one, come all! This is the perfect date movie. It’s fun, it’s quick, it’s entertaining. And it all wraps up nicely at the end. Check out this flick, grab some sushi and sake afterwards, and then pull an all-nighter at a casino if you’re feeling inspired to count some cards yourself!
